How attempting too much at once is costing me more than it should.

Have you ever been so excited about starting something, that you start to chase that feeling don't?

I get it. 

Same here.

In fact as I type this blog post I realize it has been five days since my last blog entry

And although this blog, so far, has focused on #75HARD, it is not the end goal of the website itself.

Here is what I mean. This blog, titled after yours truly, has been in the works for a long time. (Too long if you ask the author).

One thing I have been doing since pre-launch is incorporating a daily writing habit.

The birth of a new habit (and hopes of a dying off of some old ones).

This habit was born to -

1 - Become a better writer.

2 - Become a better communicator.

3 - Become an a person with a blog serving others through my experience.

No illusions of grandeur. Rather using tools we have never had available in human history to become the best human I can be.

The #75HARD challenge is what spurred me to actually make this thing official and start posting.

The idea being, since I have completed this challenge before, I would be more prepared to post daily about the experience.

I got all excited, like I do, until I realized after week 1 that was not the best approach.

Notice I said not the best approach. I didn't say not the best goal.

Moving forward I will challenge myself to post daily content. Not all content will be challenge focused however.

In fact not all content will look the same. Some will be written with video, some written only, so video only, and some with transcriptions.

Why would I have such a variety?

Because a) variety is cool, and b) to get a feel for what is best in both quality and quantity of content.

What does this have to do with you?

First, the goal with every post including this one is to provide you enough value it is worth your time to read.

Second, within the value you glean from here, you are able to find a practical application of the material.

Third, the cost of doing more than I am capable is more than I can bare.

Okay, the third point is a bit dramatic, I'll admit.

It touches on something I have learned in a variety of ways. Taking on too much is something many people, including me, struggle with.

Not because you or I are not capable of what we choose to take on. But because we may not always think through the choice before saying "yes".

With the biggest cost coming in the form of time.

They say time is money, so how much does time cost?

The fast answer is the cost of time is more than we realize. Especially when we overcommit.

The slightly slower answer, is this saying has nothing to do with money, and everything to do with value.

Not everything I commit too is valuable. Same goes for you.

Not every feeling is valuable when it becomes the goal either.

For example, people say they want to be happy. Being happiness is a feeling and seeking out things to maintain a feeling is wasteful in two ways -

1) In general, it devalues the feeling in and of itself.

If you understand nuances, congratulations, I do too. So spare the "what if's" and exceptions. I realize being happy about getting a promotion and being happy about giving someone a gift are different shades of happiness.

2) Feelings can be manufactured and manipulated, so you are better off spending your time on achievement.

Being fulfilled is created in the pursuit, not in the achievement alone.

Time is priceless, in can not be purchased. It can be invested. So invest your time in only what matters most and what you do best.

And remember, because you can do something, and are excited about it, does not mean you should commit to it.

Instead, invest time in creating an effective and efficient process to think, plan, and act without costing yourself the most precious thing you have - time.

Day 2 of #75HARD

What is the point of making something hard, easy?

The point of the #75HARD challenge is to do something hard. What is interesting is the 5 rules of the challenge are not difficult in and of themselves.

The difficult part is life happening around these 5 rules.

The distractions. The urgency and emergencies of others. The to-do list. The birthday parties. The traveling. The work schedules. The athletic events. The dance recitals, and so on. 

This is also why finding ways to make something hard, easy, is so important to your success.

Today’s focus is on my particular achilles heal with this challenge – Drinking a gallon of water a day. 

I get it, how hard can that be?  Again, it is not hard in and of itself. In fact I actually like drinking water.

What I don’t do, however, is make it a conscious effort on a regular basis to drink enough water.

Two reasons I focus on making what is hard for me, easy 

1 – Lack of intention

2 – Total time to go to the bathroom repeatedly during the day or during the night if I’m pounding ounce after ounce before bed.

By the way, this is the worst rule to have to make up at the end of the day bar none. 

Because it is the only part of the challenge that is the “gift that keeps on giving” so to speak, giving you zero chance at a good night sleep.

Once you are done with the other rules of the challenge, you are done. No long term effects waking you up every hour to go to the bathroom.

Here is what I suggest so you are not “receiving” this gift during your #75HARD experience.

Follow these three steps to make it easy on you…

Get a 32 ounce to a 64 ounce badass water bottle.

Fill it up first thing in the morning after you brush your teeth (life hack – don’t drink anything before brushing your teeth in the morning).

Then make it your goal to drink at least 64 ounces before your first meal. 

By meal, I mean your first calorie of anything except coffee or sugar free/zero calorie stuff like gum.

Three things happen by doing this:

1 – You are half way to your goal of a gallon, which is 128 ounces, of H2O for the day.

2 – You are going to be less hungry, longer into the day, which supports any diet you are on.

3 – From what I can tell, it helps with mood and energy levels as well. I have no evidence other than my own experience to support this specific claim.

If you have decided to go all-in on #75HARD challenge, use this tip to get half of your ounces down the hatch before your first meal.

The challenge is hard enough, so do what you can to make some of it easy.

Day 1 of #75HARD

Today marks a very exciting day for two reasons.

Have you ever had a project that you have been meaning to get to with all your heart and soul? No? Me neither.

Seriously though, you have, and so have I.

Which is one of the reasons today is special to me.

Because this is my first blog post on a blog with my name on it.

There will be more to follow on the details of this blog, while I wait to get the video transcripts completed and returned.

In the meantime, I hope you were able to watch the video with the sound on so you get the general scope of what is yet to come.

The second reason I am excited to post this content is due to the fact I am going for round two of the#75HARD challenge courtesy of Andy Frisella.

If you are not familiar with this challenge, listen to this podcast so you have a deeper understanding of what comes next.

The challenge is 75 days long and consists of five tasks - 

1 - Follow a diet. Any diet. No cheat meals. No alcohol

2 - Read 10 pages of a non-fiction book. Personal development, skill oriented, or biographical of someone amazing.

3 - Drink 128oz of H2O per day (that's a gallon)

4 - Take a progress picture everyday

5 - Two workouts per day, 45 minutes each. One has to be done outside.

*You have from the time you wake up, until you go to sleep to complete all five tasks.

As of right now, this content is a place holder as I will post details of my plan, why I am going at it again, and what to expect moving forward.  

If you checked out the video, then you have a pretty good understanding already.

That being said, this passion project of mine is in its early stages and for my own standard will be polished and refined to provide as much value as I possibly can.

I'm legit so fucking excited and nervous for what is yet to come.  In fact, I'm equal parts both at different times haha.
